The university announced Friday that itsintercollegiate men’s and women’zs program is being discontinued immediately, according to UW Athletic Director Scoty Woodward. The move is expected to save the universit y upto $1.2 million next or about 43 percent of the $2.8 millionj in cuts the athletic department is facing. Therw were 34 men and women on the swim teamathis year. Of those 11 are seniors. The university said it will honorr the scholarships of the remaining 23 and the three or four incoming which could reducethe $1.2 million in projected cost The swim teams have a total of 24 scholarship which are spread among the athletes as partiak scholarships.
The UW said that the athletic department will also providee transfer releases for affected student athletee if they want to compete atother schools. “Iy hurts,” said Richard Kilwien, associate athleti director. “When Scott Woodward informed the teamz it was like abomb dropped. Their worldf is upside down.” In March, the women’sx team finished 15th in the NCAAchampionshi meet. The men finished 16th. Kilwiej said there are no plans to eliminate otherathletic programs. But the departmeny is looking forother cuts, including Kilwien said that the athletics programs at UW are self-fundefd and do not receive state money.
But severao factors have led tothe cuts, including a declinew in the value of the overal university endowment fund, which supports With the demise of the swimming program, the UW will have 21 intercollegiatde sports.
